History of Collierville, Tennessee

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Collierville commenced on November 3, 1863 in Shelby County, TN. There were four minor battles at this spot during a three-month period. The Battle of Collierville was anticipated to be a Confederate cavalry attack to break up the Memphis and Charleston Railroad supported by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps, then to march to the relief of Chattanooga. Later events unfolded, leading to the battle being called off and withdrew back to Mississippi. The Memphis & Charleston Railroad remained open to Tuscumbia, Alabama, for Union troop movements.
